Sir,
With reference to the request contained in the third paragraph of your letter No 183 of the 24th instant that while accepting the office of Acting Police Magistrate during the absence on leave of Mr Wise, you may be allowed to continue to discharge the duties of Assistant Harbour Master, I am directed by the Governor to inform you that His Excellency is willing to allow a trial to be made of that arrangement.
I am however to inform you that on half pay becoming available for the post of Police Magistrate, it is to be distinctly understood that although discharging the duties of both offices you will only be allowed to draw the half salary of each.
I am also to inform you that it is quite possible that the post of Superintendent of Water Police may be severed from that of Assistant Harbour Master.
I have, &c.
(Signed) G. T. M. O'Brien.
The Honourable,
W. C. H. Hastings, R.N.
